Window Replacement and Seismic Retrofit

Marina Middle School is in the Marina neighborhood of San Francisco and is part of the San Francisco Unified School District. Marina Middle School is a historic landmark building. This approximately $10M project consisted of replacing all windows in the building, and a seismic superstructure and sub foundation upgrade.

The window system was carefully done in phases over a period of two years (two summers). The seismic upgrade work was also completed in two phases.

The windows are a "panning system" which consists of placing an aluminum exterior replacement system over existing wood windows.

The school is located on Marina bay fill, thus a seismic upgrade was needed for the building. The Seismic component of the project, also led by Bartos Architecture, consisted of fiberglass wrapping of existing column/beam connections at the interior, and an underground pressure grouting.

The Design team was awarded an ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) Design Award for Outstanding Seismic Retrofit Project. Thanks to Langon for their outstanding work
